Wedding Cake Trends and Inspiration for the New Year, 2015!

Speaking for all of us here at VW: WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE CAKE!!!!! So safe to say, we had a delightful time researching this sweet topic for you. While it’s fun to be in on the trends, with cake it’s personal and there are absolutely no rules! So for your enjoyment and as a source of inspiration we offer the latest trends and comebacks for wedding cakes in 2015.

At VW, our favorite wedding cake trend for 2015 is texture! Our sources agree that feminine touches are always in, and this year ruffles reign supreme. You can go all out with an all-over ruffle cake, or mix up the look with mixed-textured tiers. Very classy and beautiful.

A close second favorite trend is metallics. Elegant gold and silver cakes are simply stunning. Go for a pearly sheen or shimmer mixed with your own personal wedding color palette to add pizazz. We’ve especially admired the gorgeous glimmer of sequin cakes in popular colors like rose gold.

Don’t ignore the basics of cake design such as shape, frosting, and filling. Mix up the look of your cake by including different-shaped tiers. Try buttercream(it’s said to be making a comeback!) applied in an interesting texture instead of smooth fondant. Or omit the outside frosting completely for a deconstructed “naked cake.” And when it comes to cake filling flavors—be adventurous!

Finally, flowers are a simply timeless embellishment on any cake. This does not mean that your cake has to look like a rose clad relic from the past! Mix texture or bold stripes with flowers in radiant colors arranged asymmetrically. Or if you want a clean look, a smart stripe in metallic with a few precious flowers and a personalized cake topper like this one (pictured below) from ThePinkOwlDesigns[link here] would work marvelously.

Having a custom cake created to fit your taste, personality, and wedding style is an exercise in creativity, and probably a welcome break in the planning process for both the bride and groom. Sitting down for a consultation with a cake artist involves cake tasting (awesome!) and the opportunity for you to brainstorm your ideas with a designer. Often times, a sketch of the idea can be done right then and there. Some details to share with the cake artist are your dress, wedding colors, time of year and location of your wedding, any theme or flower you like and are using in the décor, or any special details about your lifestyle, how you met, etc. Happy tasting to all! Love VW.

How and When to Announce Your Engagement

Now that he’s planned all the romantic details of how to propose and has successfully swept you off your feet, your fiancĂ© can breathe a sigh of relief. . . or can he???!? If your parents have never met your future spouse, this can be an extreme source of anxiety. As parents, siblings, and close family are usually the first to hear the news of your engagement, it would be helpful to introduce him into conversations, prompting questions and opportunities to share more about him before bringing him over for a visit. Once you are all familiar, then you can feel reassured of you happy news being received more warmly, instead of it being a complete shock. For brides who have been married before and who have children it is important that your children and ex are informed first. After sharing the news with your parents and immediate family, most etiquette sources suggest calling relatives and close friends who live further away next. They also suggest calling anyone who
